The proof is in the pudding, or so they say? Either that or a minor miracle has occurred? The scars from my mosquito bites have disappeared, thanks to a Calendula Balm I picked up on a visit to the Burren Perfumery, last week. I know I had a particularly bad one on the inside of my arm, damned if I can find it now? Which will hardly surprise the owners, they get emails daily from all over the world saying pretty much the same thing, albeit in more extreme cases where cancer sufferers have had their radiotherapy burns, healed by the same miracle balm, which is just one of a selection of products, made in the Burren Perfumery, near Carron in County Clare.
And I say made rather than manufactured? As normally, I haven’t much faith in any glup that comes out of a machine, in fancy packaging, promising the earth, moon & stars, no matter what the price tag says, as it invariably disappoints. Whereas nature, wide open spaces, beech woods or a seashore never does. Which is possibly why, these products actually work ! Here on the West Coast of Ireland we are fortunate to live in one of the cleanest environments in the world. The air quality is first class, as indicated by the profusion of lichens on the rocks and trees, even the rain that falls is toxin free, having travelled in over the Atlantic on the prevailing Westerly winds.
You can wander around the delightful herb garden, a profusion of leafy, colours, smells, bees and butterflies or relax while watching an excellent slideshow all about the Burrens unique flora and fauna. You are welcome to watch the products being made, it’s like a cookery demonstration the end result being good enough to eat. But save yourself.... for the organic tearooms, which are open from Easter till the end of September, where you can have have home made soup and a local cheese platter with a Mediterranean twist for under €10! There’s a great selection of freshly baked scones and cakes to have with real herb teas or locally made apple juice.
