Father Ted . . . .

Father Ted’s house really does exist, not on Craggy Island but in north Clare, close to Mullaghmore. A cult comedy series a few years ago about 3 priests and their housekeeper living in rural Ireland. Father Jack is a bad tempered old lad with a fondness for drink and women, Father Dougal is the young novice who is beyond stupid and Father Ted is the wheeler dealer trying to keep it all together, but more often failing spectacularly and hilariously. Mrs Doyle is their devoted housekeeper who keeps them plied with endless cups of tea and ‘hang’ sandwiches.

Father Teds House, Killanboy, County Clare

Sadly the series ended with the sudden demise of Dermot Morgan in1998, who played Father Ted. Yet being one of the funniest series ever produced in Ireland it enjoys constant re-runs and is a firm favourite on best selling dvd lists here as Irish souvenirs. You can visit the house, the present owner a nice lady called Cheryl will even make tea for you if you call her in advance on 087-9214694.

If you are familiar with the series you will recognize plenty of other places highlighted in the series such as the Cliffs of Moher. There is even a Father Ted Festival, Tedfest held in Inish Mor on the Aran Islands each March, which is an action packed week of fun and craic with re-enactments of scenes from the series such as the ‘lovely girls’ competition. You need to book early though as it is very popular and sells out quickly.
